How to Get an Accurate Reading
Once you know your phone qualifies, these steps get you a clean result:
- Calibrate first. Wave the phone in a figure-eight a few times to reset the magnetometer's internal offsets.[1]
- Remove the case if it has magnets, a metal plate, or a card slot — those will swamp the sensor.
- Scan slowly and horizontally about waist height, keeping the phone flat against the wall so it can catch the localized magnetic peak.
- Mark the spikes. Two aligned spikes 16 inches apart is a textbook pair of studs — standard framing spacing in most homes.
- Confirm with a scan up and down the wall to trace the fastener line and be sure you're on the stud, not a stray screw.
